Containerization Revolution:-
There are two types of dry cargo: bulk cargo and break bulk cargo.
Bulk cargoes, like grain or coal, are transported unpackaged in the hull of the ship, large & big volume.
Break-bulk cargoes, on the other hand, are transported in packages, and are generally manufactured goods. Before the advent of containerization in the 1950s, break-bulk items were loaded, lashed, unlashed and unloaded from the ship one piece at a time. However, by grouping cargo into containers, , is moved at once and each container is secured to the ship once in a standardized way. from that way almost cargo shipped by containers vessels with a several vessels routes by several shipping lines .
the vessels for General cargo or Break bulk cargo are very specific for a certain voyage & route
From that we can say that Containerization is a system of intermodal freight transport by sea using intermodal containers ,made of weathering steel. The containers have standardized dimensions like :
20'dry freet container
40'dry feet container
40'HQ feet container
45'dry container
20'& 40' open top containers
20' & 40' Flat Rack containers
20' & 40' Reefer ( refrigerators equipment)
as we mentioned in previous topics.
The following advantages by using Containerization:
• Minimum damage and loss of goods & minimize transportation costs.
• Maximum security for the goods inside.
• Lower transportation cost per ton on average
• Maximum use of spaces
• The container is not affected by weather conditions
• Containerized transport by trucks, railways and barges is easier and less cost than the normal way of transportation.
